Grafting Cities – Energy Cities Annual Conference

Valencia, Spain - 26-27 June 2024

2024 Edition

We are organising the 2024 edition of “Grafting Cities”, our annual conference on 26, and 27 June 2024. It will take place in the city of Valencia, the 2024 European Green Capital.

With this edition, we invite our members to reveal their cities, showcasing what they are doing to « graft » their municipalities and showing how local communities are transforming urban fabrics.

“Grafting Cities”, what’s behind this concept?

Grafting cities is about writing a new story for the city’s future; reinventing each city based on what already exists; revealing how a place can flourish by building on its assets and adjusting them; transforming our cities, street by street, house by house, and place by place, to boost diversity and resiliency.

For each city, any strategy to achieve climate neutrality by 2030, 2040 or 2050 will only be possible if the “graft” is successful. Grafting is something of an art. It has been around for thousands of years, and there is something magical about it…

Revealing cities

With our conference, we want to reveal what transformations are already in action. Throughout the two days, we will explore with municipalities the strengths of each region, to reveal the invisible: a project that has led to great changes, the real cities’ needs that protect against the risks of climate change, or the lacking infrastructures to meet the needs.

Valencia Cities Climate Week

Three days of conferences

During the Valencia Cities Climate Week, we are joining forces with the Mission Cities, ICLEI and the city of Valencia to promote sustainability and find common solutions to tackle climate threats.

Bonus on 28 June 2024: City visits organised by the city of Valencia

Valencia is hosting us!

The city of Valencia has the pleasure of hosting Valencia`s Cities Climate Week, a far-reaching event that will encompass the celebration of three main gatherings: the Cities Mission Annual Conference, EURESFO 2024 (European Urban Resilience Forum), and our Annual Forum.

The celebration of such events and the participation of the EU Cities Mission, ICLEI and ourself, represent an added value to the 2024 European Green Capital. The objective of this event is not only to celebrate these three different gatherings, but to create synergies. Valencia, as a Mediterranean and green capital, constitutes the perfect scenario for coming together and sharing knowledge between the main European actors and civil society.

Cities Mission Conference

The Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities Mission Conference is returning for a third edition in June 2024 on the theme “Empowering cities – The Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities Mission in Action”. The event will gather political representatives and practitioners from the 112 Mission Cities, the Mission Platform, managed by NetZeroCities, along with high-level representatives from EU institutions, and a wide range of stakeholders, including regional and national authorities.

With a focus on the transformative journey towards climate neutrality undertaken by cities, the Conference will be a great opportunity for the Mission to celebrate progress, join forces, and share inspiration. With workshops and policy sessions addressing key challenges, the Conference is intended as a platform for face-to-face interactions and collaboration towards a climate neutral future.

EURESFO

Since 2013, the European Urban Resilience Forum (EURESFO) has been a valuable space to discuss challenges and solutions in local and regional governments’ efforts to adapt to a changing climate, manage disasters and multiple crises and build resilience. EURESFO is recognised as the most important event on urban resilience and climate adaptation in Europe.

The 2024 edition of EURESFO will be built around three thematic streams, the first focuses on multilevel governance, cooperation and just transition, the second on water resilience and the Blue Economy, and the third stream on enabling the transformation to resilient, adaptive, and climate-neutral cities. There will also be a special stream concentrating on post-conflict resilience and recovery.
