Floriane Bernardot on 29 février 2012
The Coalition for Energy Savings aims at making the case for a European energy policy that places a much greater, more meaningful emphasis on energy efficiency and savings.
It brings together business, professional and civil society associations, among which COGEN Europe, CAN Europe, CECODHAS Housing Europe, WWF, and… Energy Cities !
Indeed, on the occasion of the Board meeting held on 15 February, members of the Board agreed that Energy Cities should join the Coalition.
Energy Cities’ adhesion to the Coalition for Energy Savings will notably :
- strengthen collaboration with relevant actors of the energy efficiency and savings sector,
- help the network disseminate its know-how and political positions more efficiently,
- give the entire network more visibility,
- provide Energy Cities with an access to relevant information for building its political positions.

The Coalition for Energy Savings also pushes for the adoption of binding measures in the framework of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) construction, just as Energy Cities does.

Updates :
On 28 February the ITRE committee decided to start inter-institutional negotiations about EED as soon as possible. The committee notably voted to make a 20% energy saving target by 2020 binding.
Rapporteur on EED Claude Turmes said "Today’s vote provides a strong mandate for the European Parliament in its negotiations with the Council on the final legislation. [...] We have lost enough time : it is time for EU governments to start delivering real energy savings and a robust energy efficiency directive will be crucial to this end."
Next step :
On 28th March, the Parliament is expected to hold a plenary vote on the directive.
