Nantes (France) - Half of social housing heated by renewable energy

The Urban Community of Nantes Métropole is planning the extension of its two district heating systems. Both systems will supply schools, tertiary buildings, residential buildings, and a hospital. The progressive extension until 2017 will eventually allow to heat half the inhabitants in Nantes.

In 2017 the district heating systems will be supplied by combustion of waste (41%) and wood (43%).

The aim of this project is to cover the heating needs of social housing in priority.

As a result, 49,5% of social housing residents in Nantes are expected to benefit from a long-term drop in their bill thanks to the connection to these systems.

Condominiums joining the new district heating system will also receive a 15% reduction in their bills.
The Climate Plan of Nantes Métropole aims at reducing the CO2 emissions per inhabitant by 30% by 2020.
The installation of boilers supplied by renewable energy (including biomass or waste) is a particularly effective lever to achieve this goal.
