Geneva (CH) says no to fossil energy!

In an official statement, the SIG (Geneva Industrial Services) has pledged that all the electricity they will supply as of January 2017 will be 100% renewable, thus definitely discarding fossil energy in favour of hydro and solar power.

This decision is the result of the joint commitment by the Council of State and SIG to developing renewable energy sources, a vital condition for achieving the energy transition in Switzerland. After freeing itself from nuclear energy, the Canton of Geneva is continuing to position itself as one of the sector’s pioneers: 100% of the electricity used by Geneva households will be from Swiss renewable sources.

Meeting this challenge has been made possible by reinforcing local renewable energy production: in ten years, solar energy production has rocketed from 1GWh to 29GWh, i.e. the consumption of 9,400 Geneva households, whereas hydropower has increased by 4% thanks to the upgrade of the Chancy-Pougny dam.

Switching to 100% renewable energy produced in Switzerland and in Geneva is a major step forward towards the energy transition and the 2,000-watt society. This step also confirms the determination of the Council of State and SIG to reduce their dependency on foreign production.
