Chambéry is the capital of the department and has been the historical capital of the Savoy region since the 13th century, when Amadeus V, Count of Savoy, made the city his seat of power. It is an agglomeration of 24 different municipalities and competes for the Alpine Town of the Year award which recognises sustainable development in the Alpine region. Grand Chambéry was victorious as the Alpine Town of the Year in 2006.
As a Cit’ergie participant, Grand Chambéry has clearly identified that energy and climate issues are present in all sectors of activity (housing, tertiary, transportation, industry, agriculture) under the three main uses of energy (heat, mobility and specific electricity). From this starting point the city is developing a strategy to enable an ambitious energy transition by 2020 and 2050.
