Smart city Lyon

Lyon is constantly evolving and becoming an innovative, sustainable and vibrant smart city. Lyon Confluence – the Smarter Together project demonstration area – is one of the largest urban redevelopment projects and the first WWF approved urban development in France. It has an ambitious target such as the zero carbon objectives: the annual greenhouse gases emissions at the end of the urban project must not be superior to the level of emission at the project start.

Through participating in the Smarter Together Project, Lyon is:

  • refurbishing existing buildings of the Perrache/Sainte-Blandine area with a target of 550 dwellings – 35,000 m2.
  • developping local renewable energy production: photovoltaic systems (+1MWp) and a wood-fired co-generation power plant reduce the use of conventional cars by providing alternative means of transport for inhabitants: smart charging stands, electric-vehicle car-sharing system and an autonomous driverless electric shuttle
  • developping a data platform to monitor energy production and consumption in the area, as well as the actual effects and benefits of measures implemented to reach the zero carbon objective
  • involving citizens in the redevelopment of the Lyon Confluence area and the implementation of new services (creation of an urban living lab to allow citizens and users to co-design the smart city solutions)
  • increasing the quality of life of inhabitants through the construction of comfortable and affordable dwellings and office places, convenient public spaces, easy access to the district, etc.

In addition, another objective is to provide to the Grand-Lyon data platform new sets of dynamic data from the energy and sustainable mobility sector collected from various sources: smart power and heat meters, building energy management system, energy production systems in the area such as photovoltaic systems and the district heating power plant. These new sets of data will be used to improve existing applications or develop new ones with the aim of providing global understanding of the energy flows of the district in order to enhance the urban planning process as well as the planning, design and operation of public infrastructure.
