Cyprus Energy Agency

The Cyprus Energy Agency (CEA) is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit organization, founded in 2009. CEA was co-funded by Europe, under the Programme “Intelligent Energy for Europe”, and by the Cyprus Union of Communities. Its mission is “to actively contribute to the saving of energy resources, the protection of the environment, and the improvement of the quality of life.”

Cyprus Energy Agency helps municipalities to adapt themselves and become sustainable

The Cyprus Energy Agency enhances the role of local authorities in sustainable energy planning, providing technical support for developing and implementing actions to mitigate and adapt municipalities to climate change.

For example, since 2020, it participates in the initiative “Yeitonia +” (Living Streets) to create sustainable neighborhoods by developing utility spaces along roads and applicating Nature Based Solutions, like permeable pavements.

It also uses its voice to promote the efforts and Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SDAEK / SECAP) of the Municipalities of Cyprus participating in the Covenant of Mayors to reduce their CO2 emissions by 40% by 2030, compared to the reference year 2009.

CEA for the strengthening of Cyprus municipalities’ goals & capacities

Through the years, the Cyprus Energy Agency has become an information point for the local society, providing education and vocational training. It participates in projects in partnership with local, European and international organizations, contributing to innovation, research and sustainable development, such as the Horizon 2020 EU funded project “Compete4SECAP” that provides solutions to strengthen SDAEK and the efforts of Municipalities to reduce CO2, through energy tenders and the ISO 50001 Energy Management standard.

CEA’s vision for the period 2020-2030 is “A Cyprus that is fair, inclusive and resilient to Climate Change, governed by the principles of sustainable development”. To achieve this, CEA has set a Road Map focused on 10 thematic targets.

CEA is also an active member of the Cyprus Hub, which is supported by the Institute for Innovation and Technology (EIT Climate-KIC RIS), focusing on education, networking, and the development and promotion of innovative solutions for the shaping of a low-carbon economy.
