Tangible and concrete outcomes are the ultimate goal for each and every project focusing on energy initiatives. This is why the LIFE LOOP team is particularly satisfied about the latest achievement coming from the very South of our continent: Nicosia municipality, capital and largest city of Cyprus, launched its first energy community “Lefkothea” in September 2025.

Cyprus benefits from over 3,300 hours of sunlight annually, giving it the highest potential in the EU. This is why the country is on its way to embrace solar energy projects at larger scale. Through persistent awareness-raising and capacity building in various local areas, our Cypriot partners aim at tapping into this enormous solar potential with direct benefits for local communities. The energy community “Lefkothea” was officially born after a summer of open calls and briefings that completed the founding process initiated by the city. The community is designed to lower electricity costs, expand local generation and give residents and businesses a direct role in the clean energy transition. It is open to citizens, small and medium businesses, civil society groups and neighboring municipalities. It’s the combination of committed and enthusiastic Chypriots with funding from the LIFE-CET programme, that paved the way for this new community.

Our project partner Center for Social Innovation (CSI) is a founding member and proud to participate. The CSI team is drawing on the capacities developed through the LIFE LOOP project, mainly thanks to methods, tools and matchmaking support that help municipalities and partners structure effective community energy models. Together with the city leadership and fellow members, Center for Social Innovation will help deliver fairer bills, more resilient neighborhoods and locally owned clean power for the capital.
