The importance of engagement of all levels of government in climate action is recognised in landmark initiatives such as the Paris Agreement and the European Green Deal, as well as in most of the National Climate and Energy Action Plans. But how is this working in practice? What kinds of tools and strategies are implemented at country level to support local authorities in their task of reaching the ambitious energy and climate goals?
In this session, we look at several national level initiatives taking place in different Member States, such as Luxembourg, Portugal, Czech Republic and Belgium. These initiatives span from strengthening knowledge and skills to providing data and supporting the development and implementation of local energy and climate actions.
In an interactive conversation, we bring together local and national actors to discuss the challenges and opportunities of these initiatives, the synergies when combining initiatives and the potential for replication to other national contexts.
By offering different experiences and perspectives across the EU, this session will identify good practices and future areas of improvement when it comes to facilitating the implementation of energy and climate action at the local level with the support of national governments. The success of reaching climate neutrality by 2050 will depend on the collective action by the different levels of governance.
