Barcelona Local Energy Agency

Barcelona’s Local Energy Agency is made up of the authorities directly involved in energy and environmental management in their sphere of action: Barcelona City Council, the Metropolitan Hydraulic Services and Waste Treatment Authority, the Catalan Energy Institute and the Generalitat of Catalonia’s Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism.

The Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) are also members.

Barcelona’s Local Energy Agency has the mission of promoting Barcelona’s position as a benchmark city for dealing with energy issues and their impact on the environment. It therefore works to ensure that the city optimises the use and management of local energy resources and the promotion of quality, rational and sustainable energy demands.

Therefore, the Agency’s work is geared towards improving environmental quality and sustainable development for the city, based on fostering energy savings, energy efficiency, knowledge and use of renewable energies, and optimising the quality of services linked to this sector.

Ultimately, the aim is to make sure Barcelona fulfils its local environmental and energy commitments (established in the Energy Plan and the Public Commitment to Sustainability, 2012-2022), as well as at an international level (arising from the agreements reached at the Johannesburg, Kyoto, Aalborg and Rio de Janeiro summits).
