The LIFE BECKON project breaks barriers to delivering a 100% community-led renewable energy transition through awareness raising. It focuses on the benefits of community energy and will build capacity for new energy projects within areas where the community approach is underappreciated. It provides an array of tools and facilitates support to local authorities, energy cooperatives, citizens, and other stakeholders to become key actors in the clean energy transition.
At the heart of the LIFE BECKON support system is the One-Stop-Shop (OSS) platform. This unique platform operates as the central point for all matters relating to energy communities. User-friendly, approachable, and easy to navigate, it puts relevant information, resources, and networking at the fingertips of people and their communities to drive self-determination regarding their energy future. Structurally, the OSS platform has three hubs that are similar to the components of the LIFE LOOP community energy accreditation scheme:
Pilots and replicators from South to North
The pilot sites for LIFE BECKON are Avila (Spain), Copenhagen (Denmark), and Sofia (Bulgaria). These sites were chosen to represent a diverse range of geographical, cultural, and market maturity conditions across Europe. The project will be replicated in 25 additional EU cities with the support of various stakeholders, including national and regional energy agencies, umbrella organizations, and energy consulting companies.
Empowering Communities, Driving Change
People interesting in community energy will be able to build capacity and raise awareness. This will result in a new energy community culture across Europe with an OSS platform. Simpler than ever, LIFE BECKON makes information, resources, and support available in one place to kickstart energy communities or manage them for interested people and communities.
