Kutaisi

Ancient Crossroads and Modern Hub of Georgia

Kutaisi, one of the world’s most ancient cities, stands as a testament to history and a beacon of potential in modern Georgia. Today, Kutaisi blossoms as one of the Georgia’s largest city, an administrative hub, and a growing cultural and educational center.

Kutaisi as a cradle of European Culture and Ancient History is recognized by UNESCO as a City of Literature. It is Europe’s Eastern Gateway – Strategically positioned in the heart of Georgia, Kutaisi International Airport serves as the city’s wings, connecting it to dozens of European destinations, attracting low-cost airlines, creating competitive travel options.

Moreover, education is the heartbeat of Kutaisi, pulsating through its streets and institutions. With universities like the innovative Kutaisi International University, the city is carving out a reputation as a center of learning excellence, especially in technology and IT. Besides Kutaisi is a Land of Free Industrial Zones and a Pro-Business Ethos – Kutaisi’s geographical location is a strategic asset, offering a favorable plain relief and proximity to vital transit corridors, including international ports and an airport merely 18 kilometers away. Kutaisi should be considered as the Administrative Heart of Western Georgia – housing key state agencies and regional governance offices. Kutaisi’s rich tapestry of history, culture, education, governance, and economy weaves a picture of a city that not only honors its past but is also emphatically striding into the future.

In 2011, Kutaisi became the signatory city of the Covenant of Mayors. Besides Kutaisi is gradually becoming green city. Within GEF funded project “Low Carbon Solutions through Nature Based Urban Development for Kutaisi City”, Nature-based solutions offer an opportunity for low-carbon and green urban development in Kutaisi City. Furthermore Kutaisi’s municipality, together with local stakeholders, is working with Mayors for Economic Growth (M4EG) to chart a new approach to transformative urban initiatives as part of a broader economic development strategy. Kutaisi’s effort is a practical example of what is often referred to as ‘mission-oriented innovation or economy’ approach. Kutaisi is among the eco-smart cities, which prioritize actions to cut emissions, boost energy efficiency, and navigate a shifting climate landscape.
