From data to action: how cities can empower their energy transition

Granollers’ example demonstrates how data collection and analysis can be an ally in fighting climate change in your city

How can cities turn complex climate data into collective action?

Granollers, a Spanish city near Barcelona, shows how: by turning numbers into knowledge and knowledge into change.

Through its Abaixem els fums dashboard, Granollers helps citizens see how local emissions evolve, understand the impact of daily choices, and follow progress toward 2030 and 2050 climate goals. It translates data into stories everyone can grasp, connecting mobility, housing, industry, and energy to a shared vision of a cleaner, fairer future.

Behind this achievement lies one essential ingredient: data – collected, structured, and transformed into actionable insights that guide decisions and inspire participation.

Learn how to identify, assess, and work with the data

You’ll learn how to use data to plan the transition, design effective policies, and communicate clearly with citizens and stakeholders. No advanced technical skills required, just the curiosity to understand how good data leads to better climate action.

Enrol today to learn to define credible targets, track progress, engage stakeholders, and make better-informed decisions.

This course is part of Planning the Energy and Climate Transition for Cities, a training designed to upskill local and regional authorities (LRAs) as well as professionals involved in urban, spatial, and environmental planning.

Successful completion of this course will grant you a certificate. Moreover, by completing Integrated Energy and Climate Transition Planning and one of the other two free courses in the training- Data for a clean energy transition or Transition Management: a process for co-creating transformative change– you will be eligible to apply for the scholarship programme covering participation costs in one of the five SPARKLE Schools happening between March and June 2026.
