Mesagne

The Municipality of Mesagne is a centre in the Province of Brindisi (Italy) with an agricultural vocation, an industrious community strongly tied to its popular identity. It’s a town of about 26,000 inhabitants, in fast development, that has been able to attract more and more tourists. In 2022, the municipality of Mesagne was shortlisted as one of the ten Italian cities to become Italy’s capital of culture in 2024. In 2023, the municipality was named first cultural capital of the Puglia region.

The main wealth of the municipality is its simplicity, which is also evident in its food and wine traditions: a poor but succulent cuisine that recounts scenes of popular life, with ingredients from its own land or from trusted local suppliers and farmers and indigenous wines.

In recent years, municipal administrations have shown particular attention and sensitivity towards urban regeneration and redevelopment, including the reuse of vacant spaces and areas for new urban and social destinations.  The urban regeneration activities were used as an occasion for citizen engagement and awareness raising among its inhabitants, thanks to the involvement of experts and cultural mediators.
