Mechelen is showing how cities can lead the heat transition. The city’s approach recently earned it the 2025 Covenant of Mayors Award, recognising its efforts to build a just and collective journey towards fossil-free heating.
Join Patrick Princen, Deputy Mayor of Mechelen, for this next 15-15 Mayors Energy Talk — 15 minutes of inspiring storytelling followed by 15 minutes of open discussion with participants, on 19 November from 11:00 to 11:30.
In this session, we will explore how Mechelen is driving the heat transition: from developing an integrated Heat Plan and rolling out the first projects to establishing a multi-stakeholder Heat Coalition that brings together local government, businesses, citizens and social organisations to make the transition to clean heat a shared reality. Mechelen’s deputy mayor will also share his views on how the European Union can better support cities in accelerating the phase-out of fossil heating and cooling — a particularly timely discussion as the European Commission prepares its new Heating and Cooling Strategy and EU institutions negotiate its next long-term budget.

The 15-15 Mayors Energy Talks is a new format we designed to shine a spotlight on mayors’ achievements. These talks provide a platform for local elected representatives to share their successes and inspire others through concise, impactful discussions. Each online session features a 15-minute story from a mayor, deputy mayor or local councillor, followed by a 15-minute discussion with the audience.
