As every year, the European Sustainable Energy Week will bring together energy experts and practitioners from across Europe. Under the theme “A clean, secure and competitive Energy Union”, a wide range of events will take place from 9 to 11 June, both in person and online.
Below is a selection of sessions focused on urban challenges that we are organising, co-organising, or attending as speakers, and where we will be happy to meet our members – if not during the sessions, then during the networking moment for our members!
09 June 2026 – 14:30 to 16:00 CEST
This session will explore how local planning, managed gas decommissioning, and EU funding and technical support can unlock real investment to help cities phase out fossil-fuel heating while strengthening energy security and affordability.
Challenge addressed by the session:
Achieving energy security, affordability, and climate targets requires decarbonising heating through bold, actionable local planning. The EU is encouraging cities to develop heating and cooling plans, but financing for implementation still lags behind ambition. What can be done — and how can it be delivered quickly?
11 June 2026 – 11:30 to 13:00 CEST
This session, organised in the framework of the Covenant of Mayors Europe, will show how energy communities can include vulnerable households, reduce energy poverty and empower cities to deliver a fair, affordable and participatory energy transition.
This session echoes the joint campaign between the Covenant of Mayors Europe and Energy Cities on #HomegrownEnergy. Find out more about that campaign.
09 June 2026 – 13:30-16:30 CEST
REScoop.eu, the European federation of energy communities, is organising an event at the European Parliament on the Citizens Energy Package, with the support of Energy Cities.
Through this event, which will be attended by representatives from the European Commission, local authorities, energy communities, the European Court of Auditors and MEPs from other groups, we aim to present concrete examples that illustrate how the Citizen Energy Package can deliver tangible benefits on the ground for households and businesses and contribute structurally to stable energy prices and a more resilient energy system.
The Festival creates a place to understand people’s needs and aspirations and showcase projects that successfully reflect them. In doing so, it demonstrates how an inclusive, sustainable and high-quality built environment can foster community, strengthen resilience and boost competitiveness.
Meet us at the stand of the EUKI Project “ Transforming invisible buildings” from 09 to 12 June.
Energy Cities will attend Les Assises européennes de la transition énergétique, and you will be able to meet our team there during a special networking event organised exclusively for our members. Below is a selection of sessions we have identified as particularly relevant for urban initiatives and to which we will contribute.
24 June 2026 – 14:00-15:00 CEST
Can the new 2028–2034 European budget provide an opportunity to better align European, national, and local funding? What mechanisms can guarantee financing for local authorities’ climate strategies? Would the elimination of cohesion policy funds signal the end of EU funding for local authorities?
Speakers will share their insights on how the new European budget could translate into the French context.
