Citizen Hackathon Championship – EU Sparks for Climate

Empowering Citizens and Researchers to Address Climate Challenges

The “EU Sparks for Climate: Citizen Hackathon Championship” is an initiative funded by the European Commission and managed by DG RTD – Research and Innovation. In alignment with the European knowledge valorization policy and key European Missions, such as the Mission on Climate Neutral and Smart Cities and the Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change, its primary aim is to provide a platform for collaborative creation among teams of citizens and researchers to develop innovative solutions to climate challenges.

How It Works:

The Championship unfolds in three stages:

Local Hackathons: Virtual gatherings hosted by 22 EU locations, where interdisciplinary teams comprising citizens and researchers collaborate to address specific climate challenges posed by citizens.

Training Modules and Coaching: Winning teams from the local hackathons undergo tailored training modules and coaching sessions to refine their solutions and prepare for the grand finale at the EU level.

EU Final: Culminating in an EU-wide final, where teams compete for prizes across three categories: Best Climate Neutral and Smart Cities Solution, Best Adaptation to Climate Change Solution, and Best Cross-Cutting Solution.

Engagement and Collaboration:

Guided by facilitators, mentors, educators, and jury members, teams navigate through workshops to co-design and prototype solutions tailored to the given challenges. An Advisory Board ensures the alignment and progression of the hackathons with the EU initiatives underpinning this program.
