Local administrations are in constant crisis management. From dealing with Covid, to the current heat waves and economic crisis, they are now getting ready for a very energy-insecure winter.
We launched the Covenant of Mayors’ “Cities’ Energy Savings Sprint” last May, in cooperation with the European Commission and the European Committee of the Regions, to help local governments secure the basic needs of their citizens. Many of you have already expressed the need for more creative approaches to energy savings, and more particularly ways to create more sustainable consumption patterns to shape our everyday lives.
Such policies are commonly referred to as “energy sufficiency” or “energy sobriety”, which differ from and complement energy efficiency. They will form the backbone of the second phase of the Cities’ Energy Savings Sprint.
Three pillars will structure this new phase of the energy savings campaign:
