Welcome Cascais to Energy Cities’ network!

We look forward to working with Ambiente Cascais on carbon neutrality and innovation projects

Energy Cities is glad to welcome a new member: Ambiente Cascais!

Cascais is a charming coastal town located on the western coast of Portugal, near the capital city, Lisbon. It is a popular tourist destination known for its picturesque beaches, historic architecture, and vibrant atmosphere.

How to become a sustainable tourist destination: the example of Cascais

The Portuguese town strives to become a role model in innovation and sustainable development for the whole region. Indeed, Cascais was the first Portuguese municipality to sign the Paris Commitment for carbon neutrality. Through integrated action, intelligent resource management and a shared governance model, Cascais aims to fully achieve all its commitments in terms of climate resilience and carbon neutrality by 2050.  Projects such as MobiCascais – which is based on a platform that integrates various transport service operators, a network of infrastructures and equipment to offer citizens a sustainable mobility management system and Oxigénio a programme aiming to promote and defend local nature and biodiversity by actively involving citizens – are just two examples of many different actions that the Municipality is carrying on.

Reducing waste production and boosting circular economy is another key aspect of achieving carbon neutrality. To meet this goal, Cascais joined the EU-funded project Climaborough. Through it, Cascais has launched a call for startups interested in developing socio-technical systems that blend software (like apps) and hardware (including IoT sensors) to encourage sustainable consumption, enhance household waste sorting, and ultimately improve the quality of waste collection and the efficiency of selective waste disposal methods.

Energy Cities’ network: team up and learn from other cities’ experiences

By joining Energy Cities, Cascais looks forward to establishing partnerships with other local authorities from various countries and exchange best practices, and successful solutions as well as to talk about innovative policies for climate action.

We can’t wait to develop new innovative initiatives with Ambiente Cascais while continuing working together within the Climaborough Project!
